Join the Ontario Museum of History & Art on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from Noon to 4 PM for the free event, Family Discovery Day: Día de los Muertos. Celebrate Día de los Muertos through free art workshops, live performances, a photo backdrop and face painting for the whole family! Here are some highlights to expect during this event:

  • Live performances including Karen Rae Kraut’s Día de los Muertos storytelling and her reading of the winning story from the Tell Me a Story Contest at 2 PM. The Tell Me a Story Contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning related to the theme of Día de los Muertos.
  • At 3 PM enjoy a live performance by Mariachi Trio Los Azulado, performing traditional Mexican mariachi music.
  • Come dressed as an esqueleto (skeleton) and enter the Museum’s Catrina/Catrin (fancy skeleton) contest. To enter the contest, sign-in by 2:30 PM at the Catrina/Catrin contest table. A fashion show will take place at 3:50 PM and the winners will be announced for Best Adult, Best Child, and Honorable Mention.
  • All performances and the fashion show will take place inside the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers. Face painting and art workshops will take place throughout the Museum. Gallery Guides will provide exhibit information in the Día de los Muertos exhibit.

Día de los Muertos will be on exhibit through Sunday, November 12, 2017. This year’s theme, “Everyday Heroes,” highlights individuals who face trials of adversity while remaining strong. Whether exhibiting heartfelt tributes to loved-ones, or light-hearted and humorous pieces, the exhibit is broadly educational as it is entertaining. Participants from the city-wide art contest will also have their ornaments on display in the exhibit Día de los Muertos: Everyday Heroes.  For more information about this exhibit, please contact the Ontario Museum of History & Art at (909) 395-2510.
