Rise for Grades K - 6

What is Rise?

Rise up and read at Ovitt Family Community Library! Rise provides free reading assistance and events for students in grades K – 6. Children can learn and practice literacy skills to help them become strong readers and discover the joy of reading.

What Is Offered: Group tutoring, one-to-one tutoring, literacy programs for children and families. Reading tutoring occurs twice a week for 10 weeks. Literacy programs are  hosted regularly during after-school hours. Rise is dedicated to helping Ontario’s children rise to their full potential by making learning to read exciting and accessible.

Who Can Join: Participants must be kindergarten through sixth grade students who reside in or attend a school in Ontario and read at a lower level than their current grade's standards. Please note that K-2 dual-language students are ineligible. Students must have their own library card — they can’t use a caregiver’s card.

Application: Caregivers must complete an application for their child. Applications open twice annually: in August for the fall session, and in January for the spring session, and can be picked up in person at the Beverly Cleary Young Readers Room.

Placement: Rise's tutoring curriculum uses iReady materials and follows California Common Core state standards. Participating students’ reading levels are assessed by trained staff, then students are placed into small tutoring groups based on the results of that assessment. Once enrolled, students will receive two (2) tutoring sessions each week for ten (10) weeks.

Tutoring Attendance: Regular attendance is required. If a student can’t attend a scheduled session, caregivers must contact library staff in advance to excuse the absence. Please note that missing three sessions without notice will result in their spot forfeited. Students may reapply and will be placed at the end of the waitlist.

To get started, please visit the Ovitt Family Community Library to apply and schedule an assessment. For more information about our tutoring programs or events, please call 909-395-2207 or email Rise@OntarioCA.gov. We can’t wait to see you!

Programs

We offer engaging programs to help children and families enjoy the journey of learning to read in a supportive, no-pressure environment. Students who aren’t eligible for tutoring or can’t fit two weekly sessions into their schedule are invited to participate in our afterschool programs. There are programs designed specifically for grades K – 2, 3 – 6 and the whole family. No registration is required.
