Trap-Neuter-Release Program (TNR)
**DUE TO DEMAND, THERE WILL BE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING DELAYS**
How Does The Program Work?
Contact Community Improvement for an Application
Visit the Community Improvement Department at 208 West Emporia Street, Ontario, CA 91762 or download the TNR Application Form. Applications should be submitted and approved prior to trapping the cat.
- Applicants must reside in the City of Ontario and be prepared to show proof of residency.
- Cats must be trapped within the City of Ontario.
Upon Application Approval
The Community Improvement Department will work with the applicant and the veterinary partner to schedule a date and time for the spay/neuter services.
Trapping the Cat
On the day before or the day of the procedure, the applicant will be responsible for trapping the cat.
Obtain a humane cat trap from the Community Improvement Department or you may use your own pet carrier.
Set the trap overnight in a secure, safe location that is protected from the elements. It is recommended using canned food to attract the feral cat. Finally, place a towel or blanket over the trap to create a dark space to help the cat feel safe when entering the trap.
Please be aware you may not catch the intended cat on the first try. If this occurs, carefully open the trap and release the animal that was caught and reset the trap.
Transporting the Cat to and from the Procedure
Once you have caught the cat, bring it to the predetermined veterinary provider at the appointment date and time.
The cat will be ready to transport back to the area where it was trapped on the same day of the appointment.
Your TNR cat will not have sutures that need to be removed. Once home, evaluate the cat for release. If the cat is awake and alert it can be released back to the location it was trapped. If the cat is lethargic, allow it to stay in the cage and recover overnight. In the morning, you can open the door to the cage and allow the cat to come out when it is ready.
TNR caretakers are responsible for providing food, water, and protection from the elements and veterinary care as needed.
