Rise

Rise is a free literacy service for Ontario children in kindergarten through second grade. We offer programs to strengthen reading skills and a free tutoring service for those needing extra help.

Building reading skills early is crucial; children who struggle before third grade often face challenges in other subjects and are more likely to drop out of school. We are committed to making reading fun and accessible for all. Join us to help your child Read. Write. Rise!

Rise Reading Tutoring

We offer eligible students free tutoring twice a week at the Ovitt Family Community Library. Based on their reading level, children may be placed in one-on-one or group sessions. Here’s how to get involved:

  • Who Can Join: Students must be Ontario residents or attend Ontario schools in kindergarten, first grade or second grade – and not in a dual language immersion program.
  • Library Card: Students need their own library card to register — they can’t use a caregiver’s card.
  • Application Process: Caregivers will need to complete an application to register their child. Students will also need to complete a reading assessment with our library staff to help with placement. You can pick up applications in person at the Beverly Cleary Young Readers Room.
  • Attendance: If a student can’t make it to a scheduled session, caregivers should contact library staff in advance to excuse the absence. Please note that missing three sessions without notice will result in their spot being forfeited. You may re-enroll and be placed at the end of the waitlist.
  • Library Conduct: We kindly ask that families follow the library’s Code of Conduct.

To get started, please visit the Ovitt Family Community Library to apply and schedule an assessment. For more information about our tutoring programs or events, feel free to call us at 909-395-2207 or email Rise@OntarioCA.gov. We can’t wait to see you!

Rise Literacy Events

At Ovitt Family Community Library, we offer engaging programs to help children and families enjoy the journey of learning to read in a supportive, no-pressure environment.

Here are our recurring programs for K-2 kids:

  • Literacy Builders: Level up your literacy with Legos! Join fun challenges that boost spelling, writing, and storytelling skills.
  • Rising Readers: Perfect for those who’ve outgrown storytime! This program helps early readers enjoy reading and playing together while fostering a love for literacy.
  • Word Play: Dive into games and activities that focus on sight words and sounds to enhance word recognition and reading fluency.

We also have programs for the whole family!
