  • Household Hazardous Waste threatens human health and the environment when disposed of improperly. There is no charge for this program.
  • Reuse Center: There is a FREE reuse center where residents can pick up partially used products dropped off by other residents.
  • Electronic waste is accepted at this facility. See below for details.
  • Beware: A vehicle can drive with only 15 gallons of household hazardous waste in containers no larger than 5-gallons. Call for other parameters.
  • Residents Only: Businesses must contact San Bernardino County at (909) 382-5401.
  • For more information: Call the City of Ontario Recycling Hotline at (909) 395-2040.

Acceptable Items

Hazardous Waste: Motor oil and filters, auto fluids (anti-freeze, transmission fluids, etc.), paints and paint thinners, household cleaners, chemical drain cleaners, pesticides and fertilizers, weed killer, pool and hobby supplies.

Electronic Waste: Computers, TVs, stereos, cell phones and landlines, radios, iPods and MP3 players, microwave ovens.

Universal Waste: Household batteries, Sharps containers (needles), fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) and tubes, and mercury-containing devices.

Empty Containers: Plastic and metal containers including paint cans with no liquid or other residual materials in them are not considered hazardous waste, and can be recycled. Paint cans with dried paint in them are considered trash and can be disposed of.

Pharmaceuticals: Medications are accepted at the HHW facility, however, controlled substances are not acceptable. If you have leftover pharmaceuticals, do not flush them down the toilet because the contaminants will eventually make their way into groundwater, rivers, lakes and the ocean. Instead, bring unused portions to the HHW facility. You may also place them in a sealed container or bag and throw them in the trash container outside. If you are concerned that children may ingest your discards, crush and mix your medications with coffee grounds or kitty litter, place the mixture in a sealed container or bag and throw it in the trash.

All of these items present dangers to our health and environment. Please dispose of them properly. REDUCE AND REUSE. Use items that are less harmful to our environment, and share items with a friend or neighbor.

Sharps Collection Program

As of September 01, 2008, State law makes it illegal to place Sharps (hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, and lancets) in solid waste and recycling containers.

Placing needles in the wrong place is dangerous and can injure people as well as spread germs, including hepatitis and HIV/AIDS.

To assist Ontario residents to safely dispose of Sharps, the City is offering free Sharps Containers. Empty containers can be picked up and authorized full containers dropped off at Ontario’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility located at 1430 S. Cucamonga Avenue.

The Sharps Container Program is only available during the HHW Facility’s open operating hours - Friday and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

A Sharps mail-back program is also available for a small fee. For more information on this program and for other details on the San Bernardino’s Countywide Program, please call (909) 382-5401 or 1-800-Oily Cat.

For availability of replacement containers, call (909) 382-5401 or 1-800-Oily Cat.
