Ontario Fire Department Launches Prehospital Blood Transfusion Program
ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Fire Department is proud to announce the launch of the Prehospital Blood Transfusion Program, a new service that delivers life saving blood products directly to patients in the field.
This innovative program allows the Ontario Fire Department paramedics to administer packed red blood cells to patients suffering from severe blood loss due to trauma or postpartum complications, providing critical time until they can receive surgical interventions at a hospital. By utilizing the Ontario Fire Dispatch Center, the department will strategically deploy blood products to emergency calls with the highest likelihood of need, ensuring that lifesaving care reaches patients as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The Ontario Fire Department is the first agency in San Bernardino County to implement a prehospital blood program, following extensive paramedic training and approval from the Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency (ICEMA) to operate under a Local Optional Scope of Practice. The department worked closely with regional partners and medical oversight to ensure compliance with training and quality assurance standards.
To strengthen the community’s connection to the region’s blood supply chain, the Ontario Fire Department has partnered with LifeStream Blood Bank, as blood is a limited resource with a short shelf life. Through this partnership, LifeStream will regularly exchange blood products with the department to ensure freshness and prevent waste. Additionally, the Ontario Fire Department will collaborate with the community to promote blood donation, helping to expand the region’s donor base and maintain a steady blood supply. This collaboration not only guarantees that blood products remain available to those who need them most but also strengthens the community’s emergency response network.
The Ontario Fire Department remains committed to delivering state-of-the-art, advanced life support to the citizens of Ontario.
