The museum is currently looking for volunteers to participate in its docent training program that begins in May. Docents provide interactive group learning experiences through guided tours of museum exhibits and presentations at local schools and community centers. No previous background in art or history is required, just a passion for learning and interacting with visitors. The ability to speak a language other than English is a plus. The benefits of becoming a docent include building relationships with people who share a common interest, becoming an active participant in the community and taking behind-the-scenes field trips to destinations around the City of Ontario.

Interview with the docent committee and museum staff.
Upon acceptance into the program, the applicant will fill out an online City of Ontario Volunteer Release Form and complete the process for a criminal background check.
Be physically able to move around the museum building and grounds; to communicate verbally with visitors.
Attend all sessions of the Docent Training Program (approximately 2 months) and complete take-home assignments.
Be available for docenting assignments a minimum of 15 times per year.
Commit to docenting for at least two years following graduation from the training program.

Training sessions will take place at the museum beginning in May of each year. Program completion is expected in June of each year with a docent graduation. Training sessions will meet on the first three Wednesdays of each month from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Museum’s Council Chambers.
Training topics give docents information needed to conduct fun and successful tours through lectures, gallery activities, and practice tours. Topics include Ontario and regional history; secrets to good docenting; an in-depth look at the museum’s two local history exhibits, Road Ways and Gem of the Foothills; and the outreach program Ontario History on the Go. Ongoing orientations give an overview of new exhibits and docents will have the opportunity to go on field trips to local historical sites and museums.
